Welche Funktion hat die Prostata?

Die Prostata ist die so genannte Vorsteherdrüse des Mannes. Eine Drüse, die einen Teil der Samenflüssigkeit produziert, etwa kastaniengroß ist und unterhalb der Blase liegt.

Wenn sie sich im Alter vergrößert merkt der Mann das, indem er schlecht Wasser lassen kann. Zudem können sich dort Krebserkrankungen und Entzündungen abspielen. Das sind allesamt mehr und minder Alterserscheinungen. In jungen Jahren merkt der Mann die Prostata eigentlich gar nicht. Sie ist ein ganz normales Organ, das der Fruchtbarkeit des Mannes dient.

Welche Erkrankungen der Prostata sind häufig?

Die weit aus häufigste Erkrankung der Prostatadrüse ist die gutartige Vergrößerung. Zwei Drittel aller Männer sind im Laufe ihres Lebens davon mehr oder minder betroffen. Man merkt es daran, dass man schlechter Wasser lassen kann im Alter. Aber auch die Krebserkrankung der Prostata ist eine häufige Erkrankung. Insgesamt der häufigste Krebs beim Mann.

Warum sollten Männer zur Vorsorge zum Urologen gehen?

Der Prostatakrebs ist die häufigste Krebserkrankung des Mannes und die Vorsorge dient dazu, diesen Krebs sehr frühzeitig zu erkennen. Gerade die aggressiven Prostatakrebs-Formen treten in jüngeren Jahren auf, so dass wir Vorsorgeuntersuchungen ab dem 45, oft schon ab dem 40. Lebensjahr empfehlen, um die aggressiven Tumoren frühzeitig erkennen zu können. Dabei muss man bedenken, dass die Hälfte der Patienten ein Prostatakrebs haben wird, an dem sie nicht versterben werden. Da wäre sinnvoll, diesen entweder gar nicht zu erkennen oder zumindest nicht zu behandeln. Insofern ist die Früherkennungs-Untersuchung sehr anspruchsvoll und eine detaillierte Untersuchung, die von Fachleuten durchgeführt werden muss.

Ich bin Leiter der Urologischen Universitätsklinik in Düsseldorf und beschäftige mich seit Jahrzehnten mit der Diagnostik und der Therapie des Prostatakarzinoms. Zudem bin ich Leiter der Zertifizierungskommission der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft für Prostatakrebszentren in Deutschland und arbeite insofern mit sehr vielen anderen Experten und auch Betroffenen in der Weiterentwicklung von Qualitätsthemen zur Behandlung des Prostatakrebses zusammen.

Das besondere an der Klinik der Universitätsklinik in Düsseldorf ist, dass wir eines der  zertifizierten Prostatakarzinomzentren der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft sind.

Das bedeutet, dass Patienten, die zu uns kommen nicht nur von einem Urologen beraten werden, sondern durchaus auch von einem Strahlentherapeuten, dass alle Therapieoptionen neutral vermittelt werden und wir dem Patienten alle modernen Therapiemöglichkeiten zur Behandlung des Prostatakrebses und alle Diagnosemöglichkeiten, die ganz neu auf den Markt gekommen sind anbieten können .
